Paypal replaces the need for a merchant account but has its own pros and cons.  It enables individuals and businesses to start selling online right away.  However, your customers will leave your website to process their payment, and Paypal will charge you a percentage of each transaction.

Security, Security, Security

An SSL Certificate, or Secure Sockets Layer, is required by most merchant services to ensure that your customers financial information is protected.  There is an annual cost to maintaining a SSL Certificate on your domain. 

In addition to the SSL Certificate, it is important that the server your website is hosted on is a PCI compliant Server.
